Friends for the Journey
As we become more and more invested in Seattle’s University District, Sinners & Saints has also been searching for a denominational home. Occasionally someone will ask, “do we really need a denomination?” My answer is usually the same: “We may be able to do this ourselves, but why would we?” While I was not raised in a particular denomination, during seminary and my earlier ministry career I came to see the value and benefit of being part of a larger family. A church alone may get discouraged, wondering how it will accomplish everything on its own. A church that realizes it is only one member of a larger body experiences freedom in realizing different parts can work together, and may be good at different things.
For example, Church 1 in suburban Bellevue might have a wonderful children’s ministry, complete with summer programs and regular community-wide events, involving a number of work-at-home parents and doing great things in the community. Church 2 in urban Seattle might have a great after-school tutoring program working alongside low-resource elementary and middle schools. Church 3 in north Seattle may have an excellent ESL program benefiting new immigrants to the neighborhood. If they’re part of the same family, these churches could learn a great deal from one another, and perhaps partner to accomplish more together than they ever could have alone. Part of the beauty in working with a denomination is building together.
This Sunday, Sinners & Saints is inviting all of our community to join us as we welcome special guests from the United Church of Christ Churchplanting Team. Before we gather, take a moment to review their website at http://www.ucc.org/ and the Pacific Northwest Conference site at http://www.pncucc.org/ Bring your dreams, questions, and come ready to consider being part of the same family.
See you Sunday!
- FOOD BANK PARTNERSHIP CELEBRATION
Since March, all the Sinners & Saints folks have been volunteering at the University District Food Bank on a regular basis. Thursday nights have been a great time to connect with each other, and our local community. While most weeks we have had 3-5 people working together, we’re planning an all-church Thursday with as many folks as possible volunteering on the same date, to work together and donate some special items through a partnership with Trader Joe’s. Join us from 5-8 on Thursday, July 29th. To RSVP via email: email@example.com
If you are a Sinners & Saints regular, please consider making a donation to our Food Bank Partnership Night. While we are asking Trader Joe’s to donate food items, critical items such as feminine products, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soaps, shampoos, and baby wipes are always needed. To donate to this project, checks can be made out to ‘Sinners and Saints Church’, with ‘Food Bank Partnership’ in the subject line. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for our snail mail address, or info on how to set up an electronic transfer. Regular support and donations can also be sent to this address, and tax-deductible receipts are available from our finance team. Thank you for partnering with us!
- UCC PARTNERSHIP POTENTIAL
Join us on July 18th as we invite the regional minister of the UCC to join us for an informational conversation. If you can make it, please let Pastor Leah know. We want to set this up when as many regulars can join us as possible. email@example.com
