Meet Joe
Last week, I met a friend from seminary for dinner and conversation in the University District. As we munched our pizza, she shared about her new internship at a local church, and I shared about Sinners & Saints and our dreams for connecting with the U-District community. As we left the restaurant, we noticed the security guard on the corner. My friend greeted this gentleman and we struck up a conversation. Turns out the security guard from Fiji came to the United States as a missionary, works part time as a pastor, and is going back to school to reach out to local immigrants caught in the criminal justice system. All that, and he works as a security guard. We exchanged phone numbers and promised to have a conversation soon about ministry and churchplanting. Joe’s a churchplanting and outreach ministry veteran.
I have walked down Joe’s street quite a few times. I’m sure at some point, I walked right past him and didn’t notice. His story reminds me again that we all have stories. So often, in places like the U-District, the people who make the neighborhood run become invisible, part of the background. How can we be intentional about slowing down, talking to the person singing for quarters on the sidewalk, the security guard at the building down the street, the guy making your coffee or your falafel, or the woman sweeping up at UW? As we continue to partner with folks in the U-District, let’s get out and meet our neighbors!
Hang out with us in the neighborhood this Thursday at the U-District Food Bank from 5-8pm, and next Tuesday, August 17th, from 6:30 – 8:30 for a little Frisbee and conversation at Gasworks Park. Join us for our first church Retreat August 27-29!
Peace to you,
Pastor Leah
